Derived from the word "metropolis", meaning mother city, or capitol city...In ancient Greece, the "polis" concentrated on the one founding town of a "city state," usually walled, but which included the surrounding countryside. Ideally, the polis was a corporation of citizens who all assembled in a central site to participate in the community's government,  defense, artistic, social, cultural, and economic welfare.
